It's so fun having time to get to know our students at the beginning of the year. Building relationships is foundational to everything we do as educators, so I try to make sure my students spend a lot of time working together either in small groups or partnerships.

For a few years, I have used famous pairs cards in my class that I've written on index cards. Basically, these cards have an even number of words written on them (one word written on each card) such as cookies, milk, mashed potatoes, gravy, salt, pepper, etc. When I'm ready to get my kids working together in pairs, I mix the cards up and pass out one to each student. (If I have an odd number of students in my class, then I keep the last card and will be a partner to one of my students.) Then my kiddos silently walk around with their cards held up next to their heads trying to find their famous pair. They LOVE searching for their partner, and it's a trip to watch!

So this year, I decided to make my cards a little fancier than the hand-written version and add a couple more features thanks to the inspiration of Dr. Spencer Kagan. Sometimes, once my kiddos are in their partnerships, I want one partner to talk and the other to listen and then switch roles. So I added an "A" and a "B" to each card so it would designate who is who. When I say, "Partner A goes first," the partnerships will be able to start right away and no more Rock, Paper, Scissors to decide who goes first. Also, there are times when I want my partnerships to link up with other partnerships, so I made sure there are 4 cards per color. Finally, each card has a number - 1 through 5. If I need to, I can have all of the number 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s gather together to share what was happening in their individual partnerships. The bottom line is I wanted some flexibility in the cards, so I tried to add some of these features. Here, look for yourself...
There are 28 cards in all (14 pairs), so hopefully that will accommodate the largest class size. God bless you IMMENSELY if you have a class size larger than 28. Just print, laminate, cut them out and you're good to go!

I hope you have as much fun with your famous pairs as I do!

Enjoy!

It's time for your kids to break out into small groups and begin working on a task. Or they are about to start a game. The first question I always anticipate is, "Who goes first?" Here's something that will get your kids engaged in deciding who will start the activity or game.

There are 40 cards in all. You can put these on a ring and just pick one randomly to call out to groups. You can also randomly pick one to give to each group so that each group has a different way to find who goes first. Of course, at the beginning of the year when you are setting your routines, you'll teach your students what to do if they need to have a tie breaker or if no one in the group satisfies the criteria.

I've also created 5 spinners that can be used in the same way. Kids use a paperclip and a pencil to spin the spinner. These spinners can be put on a ring and hung in a convenient location. They could also have a magnet applied to the back and put in a handy dandy spot so your students can get to them.
I've also created a teacher card that has all 40 ways on one card so it's at your fingertips; you'll see it in the download.
Telling Time Game with 5 LevelsZabinga! It's a new twist that I've put on an old game. And I'm using telling time as the skill for this super easy-to-play and super fun game. Your students can play this game in pairs or in small groups. All they need is a set of leveled playing cards with some ZABINGA cards sprinkled in. (Teacher directions for what to put in each game bag is included in download.)
These are available individually in black and white clocks as well as colored clocks. Just click on the images above to hop on over to my TpT store. If you'd like to grab all five sets, just click below. You'll get a lot more and have some more flexibility too.

In this PDF file, each level has different printable versions because everyone has different capabilities. Some of us have access to color printers, and others of us don't. So each level is provided in a black and white version as well as a color version. I usually print in black and white onto bright card stock, and I use a different color of card stock for each of my sets. It really helps keeps my sets together.

I've also created each set in business card format using Avery Business Cards (2" x 3.5"). Can you say EASY? You can grab a set of these business cards at the store for $11-$13 for 250 cards. They are durable and so stinkin' easy to pop out. NO MORE CUTTING ON THE PAPER CUTTER!!! For those of us who don't have the means to get business cards, then each set is provided in a regular format. Just print, laminate and cut out.

ALL of this (actually 26 documents) is included in your download. Woo hoo!

So how do you play ZABINGA? Cards (leveled playing cards with 4 ZABINGA cards mixed in) are placed in the middle of the group. On each player’s turn, she or he will take a card from the top of the pile and answer the question on the card. If the answer given is correct (answer keys are included in sets), the player gets to keep the card. If the answer given is incorrect, the card is placed at the bottom of the pile. If a ZABINGA card is drawn, the player must put all of the playing cards she or he has collected so far back to the bottom of the pile. The ZABINGA card is then put aside in a different stack. It is the next player’s turn. Students will continue playing until all of the playing cards from the pile are gone. The player with the most playing cards is the ZABINGA winner. Woo hoo! I've made an instructions card that fits nicely inside a sandwich-size Ziploc bag along with the playing cards. So, all your kids will need to do is grab a bag, pop a squat on the floor, and play! Yes!

Here's what the cards look like:
But wait...there's more! As I was making this game, I thought these cards would be PERFECT for a game of Scoot! So, I've included some instructions for how you can play this whole class review game along with a game board. Consider this your GIFT WITH PURCHASE. If you have not played Scoot with your class, I cannot encourage you enough to give it a try! It is so much fun!
Happy July! It's been a busy summer so far. Lots of fun training opportunities which means lots of reasons to appreciate the people I've been hanging out with. I have a tutorial to share with you that is super cute and super inexpensive.

But first I wanted to let you know some exciting news. By spending time with so many of my friends this summer, I've had a lot of time to talk to them about my blog and all of the things I want to accomplish. One of the questions I'm always asked is, "Why do you always give your stuff away?" Well, I have always wanted to share what I use in my classroom with other people and if someone else can use it, then great. The more I blog and the more that people download my freebies, the more I realize that I would like to do more. I've decided in order to do more, I need a few more resources. Therefore, I've decided to open a TpT store so that I can continue to provide as many free resources as possible. In fact, this free tutorial is my first "product."
If you're like me, you might be like, "Huh? What are those?" You'll recognize them when you see them. They are basically the tools that our budding scientists use to carry out scientific investigations. They are what they need in order to learn new knowledge. And, I believe teaching them and giving our students lots of time to practice them are just as important as teaching content. Check out The Institute for Inquiry for more information.

I also believe our kiddos need to know what they are and when & how they are using them. Here are some posters (8.5" x 11") from which you can use to teach as well as display in your classroom.

We have 9 days left of this school year. That's right; we're in the single digits, people! I'm looking forward to the summer, and I'm working on a training class that I'm doing for my district - Multi-sensory Spelling Instruction. As part of this professional development, I'm offering these multi-sensory spelling activity cards along with these spelling routine cards. The first cards (done in color as well as black and white) can be used as a reminder as you go through your short, daily spelling routine. These can be laminated and laid on the table, posted on a white board, used as a bookmark, etc.
The activity cards (below) can be used during your students' daily practice. In researching and preparing for my training class, I came across this quote:

The act of tracing
with fingers on a texture helps make a sensory imprint on the brain that
increases memory and retention.

With that in mind, many of these activities intentionally provide an opportunity for students to practice their words by tracing. They also focus on getting as many senses involved as possible and hopefully your students will find them fun. This is a compilation of ideas targeted for students who struggle with spelling and need something different than the typical ways we ask kids to practice spelling words.

Helping kids understand when singular base words stay the same and change when becoming plural is a part of the journey of 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades. Giving them tools they can refer to can definitely assist them, and foldables glued in notebooks can do just that.

Here's another one that I use. (See this post, this one, and this one for more ideas and some background on how to use them.) For this one, I usually model a couple of singular base words in each category along with their accompanying modified plural words. Then I ask my brilliant word nerds to offer suggestions and we add them. Finally, I tell them to hunt for words in their reading that they can add to their foldable. (If they run out of room on their notebook paper, they write on the back of the flaps.)

I've included a black and white version which you can print on white or colored paper as well as one that has some color on it. Use this colored one however your little fancy pants heart desires.

Let's admit it; we all do it. We creatively ask our kiddos to line up...not because we want to know how many kids are wearing red shirts or how many have laces on their shoes. No, we do it because it helps to get our kids quiet and listening...the perfect prerequisite for a peaceful line.

Sometimes, if you're like me, you need a fresh idea for lining up your little sweet peas. Maybe you'll find this helpful. Twenty-four ideas (download the {free document} to see them all) that will get your kiddos in line and ready to go. I'd love to add your ideas, so be sure to follow me and leave a comment with how you creatively get your kiddos in line.
</left>Woo hoo! It's time to practice understanding and using onomatopoeia with my little authors. I've combined ideas that are swirling in my head as well as those found on the web into one lesson.

In my classroom, I use PowerPoint for nearly every direct teach lesson. Due to terms of use on graphics that I've purchased or snagged for free, I cannot share a PowerPoint with you. But I can convert a PPT into a PDF. Although it does lose some features, the content is still there and if I design my PPTs knowing that I'm converting them to PDFs, then I can make them without animations and such.

Anyway, back to the fun figurative language device known as onomatopoeia...such a fun word to say. Here's a sample of my {free Onomatopoeia Lesson}. Go on...grab the complete lesson & activity with all 15 slides for free and follow me while you're at it.

Last week I shared a foldable to be used with exploring adding -ing and -ed to base words especially for words where you have to double the last consonant. Find that post {here}. My little word hunters loved using their story of the week to find examples of base words that don't change when these word endings are added and examples of words that the final consonant must be doubled.

I was SUPER excited when my 2nd graders began to noticed that there were base words that had changed but not by doubling their last consonant. Yahoo!!! So here's a foldable that includes all of the rules.

We glue this foldable into our notebooks, and my kids use a story to search for words that fit the flaps. They write base words under the left side flaps (on the notebook paper) and write the base words with the endings added on the right side flaps (on the notebook paper). If they run out of room, they can write on the back side of each flap. They actually wanted to run out of room so that they could write on the flaps. They had a FANTASTIC time doing this Word Endings hunt!

</left>My students are reviewing which words have to be changed when adding -ing and -ed. I figured a foldable would be fun as well as flexible enough to meet my kids' needs. I tweaked my free Prefix and Suffix Foldable.
Here it is before the flaps are folded back revealing what's underneath...

My students glue their foldables inside their interactive notebooks. For this foldable, your students will only apply glue behind the "Word Endings," "-ing Happening Now," and "-ed Already Happened" sections. They will cut all of the other sections to create foldable flaps.

As you talk about inflectional endings (letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning), you can have kids generate their own ideas for base words where nothing happens when an ending is added as well as words that have the final consonant doubled before adding the ending. (I've expanded this foldable to include more ending rules and you can find it {here}. I tell my kiddos that most CVC words will need to have that final consonant doubled. They will find that the vowel has a short vowel sound, and yet we always find exceptions...like words ending in /x/ like box.

So underneath each flap, students can generate words that fit each section.
You will need to cut the answer keys apart, and I suggest laminating them for durability. (There are 12 keys on a page, so you'll only need to print this page once. And surely you'll have extra answer keys just in case any get "lost.")

Enjoy!

I'm not a fan of worksheets as you know, so when it comes to understanding and using prefixes and suffixes, a foldable came to mind. I searched the web to see what was out there. I found something here that had a prefix foldable and a separate suffix foldable. Love it!! Since my objective included both prefixes and suffixes, I decided to play around with the foldable idea and here's what I came up with...

We just cut the three prefix flaps and two suffix flaps and folded them back. Little drops of glue were applied to the back of the sections that say, "Prefix," "Word Parts," and "Suffix." My second graders loved assembling their word parts foldables.

After we had everything in place, we talked about the meaning of each prefix and wrote it on the back of each flap. Then I encouraged my kiddos to generate examples of words containing each prefix which were written on their lined paper. (Please excuse any spelling errors...we continue to work on that skill.) :)

One of my teammates suggested that I modify the foldable to replace the "Word Parts" section with "Base Word." Brilliant! So I've included both ways in the freebie.

Finally, I have included two pages that have blank sections next to "Prefix" and "Suffix" so that you can have your kids write in the prefixes and suffixes they are practicing.

In searching for a new way to teach context clues, I ran across this blog post showing how to use the book Baloney (Henry P.) In Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith's story, Henry is an alien schoolkid who needs to come up with one good reason for why he is late for szkola again. Otherwise, his teacher promises that he will have detention forever.

I decided this would be perfect for my 2nd graders. I read the book to my little aliens, and we made a chart just like Mrs. Whitehurst. Since my kiddos are a year older than hers, we were able to talk a little bit more about word parts, word roots, and derivatives as the clues to the words and their meanings.

After reading the book, I told my students that they were to come up with one more reason to explain why Henry was late for school. They had to include a nonsense word in their excuse which could be figured out using the context clues given in their explanation. It was a lofty goal, and I wasn't sure if they could do it. With a few examples and a little tweaking, they got the hang of it and they LOVED it!

If you're like me, you'd like one place with all your fun music and movement videos at your fingertips. And it'd be great if those videos were in a safe format so that annoying content wasn't displayed before or after your video played.

I took the videos that many of my colleagues use on a regular basis and made a Symbaloo (a really cool visual bookmarking tool that helps people keep their favorite links in order.) First, I converted each video into a link on SafeShare.tv - a wonderful site that generates a safe link for YouTube videos. It removes all the yucky stuff you don't want. You might have one ad pop up at the bottom of the video right when you hit play, but that's about it. No more questionable content on the sides and nothing comes up when the video ends. Woo hoo!

So, here it is!

When I find engaging videos, I add them to my Symbaloo which updates automatically. If you have a favorite that you'd like to suggest I include, just leave me a comment and I'll check it out. (My Symbaloo was updated in September '14 to include new videos, GoNoodle and many Kid President videos.)

Enjoy!

Here's a fun game that helps your students practice building numbers. This game is flexible so that you can differentiate to meet the needs of your students. If you have kiddos who are working on building 6-digit numbers, then they can play this game together. For kids who are needing practice with 2-digit numbers, they can play this game too!

The materials you will need are:

one game board (first page below) per group of kids (Partners work best, but a trio of kids will work too.)

one number cube (A regular 1-6 number cube will work. If you want to make a number cube from a blank cube by writing the numbers 4-9 on the faces, you can do that for a game variation.)

paper and pencil or white board and dry erase marker for each student

Best of all, it's FREE as usual here at I Love 2 Teach! Enjoy!

Happy Fall, Y'all!

My adorable pumpkins are falling in love with books. That's one of my favorite parts of teaching 2nd grade - seeing my little guys discover their love of literature. So here are a few freebies for reader response.
My students use these spinners, and they LOVE them! All they need is a pencil and a paper clip to make the spinner. I tell them to spin it and write the answer to the question in a notebook or on a piece of paper. If they land on the same question more than once, I instruct them to simply spin again.

Double Bingo game board

Double spinner

paper clip and pencil for spinner (see picture below)

The directions for how to play are at the bottom of the game board, but once your students start playing bingo games, they will quickly get the hang of it and will be successful without needing instructions. On the spinner, I've included some before, during and after thinking prompts.

This bingo game can also be played with number cards (#s1-12 and two or three cards for each number) instead of using a spinner. Just cut off the bottom of the game board and verbally tell your students how to play. They just shuffle a stack of cards, place them face down and take turns selecting a card to double.

Enjoy!
Here's another freebie to help our tater tots practice identifying complete and incomplete sentence as well as writing with capital letters and using correct punctuation.

The materials that you'll need are simple:

Complete It cards (4 pages for a total of 20 cards)

Complete It direction tent

Ahead of time, cut out the sentence cards and fold the direction tent in half if you want it to stand up. (Dog-ear one corner to make it stand up without splaying.)

{sigh}

So, it's been a while since I've blogged.

{sigh}

Would you please accept my apology?

{grovel, beg, plead}

My spring and summer got <strike>a little</strike> a lot crazy, and my time for blogging got put on the back burner. I had so many incredible opportunities this spring & summer, and I learned bunches! Hopefully over the next few weeks, I can share my experiences with you here.

Well, school has started, and it is going to be a fantastic year! My energetic little green beans are keeping me on my toes, and I'm so excited to go along this journey with them!

To make up for my lack of blogging, here are a few freebies you might find adaptable for your classroom.

Savvy Sentences
Skill: Identifying words needing capital letters and when to use a period in a sentence

As you know, I don't do traditional worksheets. Since the ultimate goal is for students to be able to write sentences with correct conventions, I created this station which is a spin on Super Sentences.

Print these sentence cards on cardstock, laminate for durability, cut apart, and voila - you've got yourself a literacy station that's meaningful. The direction tent can be printed on cardstock, folded in half and if you dog-ear one corner, it will stand up without splaying out.
Monitor Comprehension Bookmarks
Once again, I'll be using the Comprehension Toolkit with my students. I ♥ it so much because of the results I see and hear. These bookmarks can be used as bookmarks or can be glued into notebooks as a part of a mini-lesson on monitoring comprehension.
My last freebie for you came from reading Developing Visual Literacy in Science K-8. The authors use this thinking process to help children develop the ability to reflect metacognitively about what they see. (Great book if you ever have the opportunity to pick it up!)

I've used the See, Scan, Analyze two ways. 1) Show students a photograph and have them see, scan and analyze it using the structure of observations, inferences and emotions. 2) Give students an object to observe and follow the same structure. While we are making our observations, inferences and emotions, we are having a rich discussion and asking lots of questions. I encourage them to draw pictures too in the boxes. They love doing See, Scan and Analyze.

My 2nd graders have been so busy practicing their reading strategies, and I am so proud of them. It is so exciting to see them THINK while they are reading. This year we have been utilizing The Comprehension Toolkit by Stephanie Harvey and Anne Goudvis, and the results are truly amazing.

Recently as we worked on leaving tracks of our thinking, we focused on making text-to-text connections. My team and I also wanted to challenge our budding readers to compare and contrast two different genres of text, so we read a fiction story on one day and then a poem on the next day. For this reading experience, the key to picking out the poem was to choose one that had story elements. It worked out perfectly and we were able to reinforce the elements of a poem at the same time. Score!

On each day, we filled out this page where we did some parts together, some parts in pairs and the rest individually:

Then on the third day, we used each page above (previously filled out) to complete the page below as we compared (similarities) and contrasted (differences). Again, we did one similarity and difference for each together as a whole class, one in pairs and then they tackled one on their own. It completely stretched their thinking and they LOVED it! I forced them to think of similarities and differences that were somehow related. That's what made it challenging and a lot of fun.

In the rounded rectangles in the "Story" area is where I asked them to draw and color a picture of their favorite part of that story/poem. In the shaded "My Connection" area is where they made a self-to-text connection for that story/poem.

I was blown away by some of the ideas my kiddos generated and I can't wait to do this again!!
OK, friends...let's be honest here. We've made it 100 days! Our mid-year assessments have been completed or we are hopeful they will be finished very, very soon. We are counting the days to Spring Break, not because we want a week off (but let's face it...by then, sometimes we desperately need it), but because we get to break out our super cute spring outfits.

And it's at this time of the year that our kiddos might be getting a little restless. OK, "might" is a little mild. I know in my classroom, my little baby bears are showing signs of academic unrest with some of our routines. So, I decided to create this <strike>fake game</strike> activity which might help spice up their Work with Words life.

Hopefully, this will keep them on their toes as they practice their spelling words. Used individually or maybe working with a partner, I can envision this being used in a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th grade classroom. If you have some firsties (first graders) who need a more rigorous spelling practice, then perhaps this will meet their needs. The only materials you would need to provide besides this printable are two number cubes. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy! Enjoy!
